Robots around us

Where robots already work

Robots are not only in science fiction. They are increasingly part of life across Africa and the world:

  • Agriculture: drones that map farms and check crop health
  • Health: machines that deliver supplies or assist in surgery
  • Industry: arms that assemble and sort products
  • Daily life: automatic doors, smart taps, delivery robots

Many of the most useful robots are simple. A cheap sensor and a small controller can automate watering a farm or sounding an alarm. You do not need a humanoid robot to solve a real problem.

Practice

Think of one problem in your community that a simple sensing-and-acting machine could help with, for example an alarm when a water tank is full. Note what it would sense and what it would do.
