Using AI for Your Dissertation, the Honest Way

AI / ML

The Literature Review · Lesson 15 of 33

Finding the gap

Where your work fits

A strong literature review does not just list what others found. It shows the gap: the question others have not answered, which your dissertation will address.

Once you have read your sources and made your own notes, AI can help you step back and see patterns.

Try this, using only your own notes:

Here are my notes from the papers I have read: [paste your own summaries].
What themes appear across them? What questions seem unanswered or debated?

The gap you choose must come from sources you have genuinely read. AI can help you notice a pattern, but you must confirm it is real by going back to the papers.

Practice

Paste your own reading notes into AI and ask what gap appears. Then check that gap against two of your sources. Write the gap in one sentence, in your own words.
