Using AI for Your Dissertation, the Honest Way

AI / ML

Writing With AI as an Editor · Lesson 22 of 33

What AI should never write for you

The lines you do not cross

Some parts of a dissertation must be entirely yours, no matter how tempting it is to get help. If AI writes these, the work is no longer yours.

Never let AI write:

  • Your original analysis and interpretation of results
  • Your argument and conclusions
  • Your reflection on what your findings mean
  • Anything you would not be able to explain in your own words if asked

Editing these for grammar and clarity is fine. Generating them is not.

A simple self check before you keep any sentence: if my supervisor asked me to explain this right now, could I? If not, it should not be in your dissertation.

Practice

Go through your draft so far and mark any sentence you could not explain in your own words. Rewrite each one yourself until you can.
